Day 01: Amsterdam to Utrecht#

This is my first post of the cycling trip as I speak I’m typing this in a tent in the outskirts of Utrecht (with Nvim and Termux). I was worried that I was going to be too cold tonight so I’ve wrapped up with two jumpers.

Today we’ve disembarked from the ferry at the DFDS Amsterdam ferry terminal; cycled to Amsterdam and got a burger; got a coffee and a cake at Weesp; cycled to Utrecht along the Vecht canal.

We’ve cycled ~60km today and we are doing the same tomorrow to get to Arnhem. At Arnhem we will meet the EuroVelo 15.

I didn’t do an update yesterday on the ferry, so this entry will combine ‘zeroth’ and first day into a single entry.

Boarding the Ferry#

We arrived to Newcastle by train and got in at 13:52. Then we went along the National Cycle Route 72 to the ferry terminal in North Shields.

Newcastle Ferry Terminal

On the ferry it was one big ‘cheese fest’, with karaoke, bingo and a middle-aged live band – it was an absolute joy.

We had a spare a €5 and doubled our fiver on the ‘black and red’ machine.

Morning: Disembarking from the Ferry#

We disembarked at ~10:00 CET. From the ferry we headed straight to Amsterdam. My first impression of the Netherlands was that the infrastructure was amazing! There are: bike lanes along every road we’ve been in, traffic lights just for bikes and arrows that indicate who has right of way.

We noticed that the infrastructure was incredibly impressive. Within the industrial outskirts of West Amsterdam we cycled past immense turbines producing electricity. I felt it made the industrial complex more harmonious.

We got into Amsterdam at 12:30 where we immediately got a burger. Windturbines Amsterdam (Windturbines on the way to Amsterdam)

Afternoon: Cycling to Utrecht#

After that we promptly left Amsterdam to travel to Utrecht. Again, the cycling infrastructure was immense. The whole route was along a huge canal and there were canal boats carrying cargo.

We made a pitstop at Weesp for Coffee and a cake, where I had the best Red velvet cake!

We departed the town at 16:00 and made it to Utrecht by 18:00.

Evening: Arrival in Utrecht#

We arrived at our campsite and made our tent (where arguments were had over tent setup).

Then we decided to make our own dinner so we headed to Albert Hejin and got chinese soup and vegan meatballs.

That’s all for now Goedeavond!
